The Inn overlooks Pohakumanu Bay. In Hawaiian, pohaku literally means rocks and manu means bird. The Koa'e Kea bird (also known as the White-tailed Tropicbird) which is almost all white with long graceful white streaming tail feathers, is frequently seen over the bay soaring high, gliding in the trade winds looking for small fish to feed on. The Koa'e Kea nests in the crevices of the surrounding rocky cliffs. Therefore, the name of the bay, Pohaku (rock), Manu (bird) refers to the Koa'e Kea that nest in the rock cliffs. Our location is the first area north of Hilo that has cliffs sutible for the birds to nest. What is a Boutique Hotel? Boutique Hotels are modeled after small, family-owned and operated European hotels which indulge their guests with superb service in an intimate atmosphere. We are family-owned, and we offer more services and amenities for the traveler wanting a bit more than the traditional Bed & Breakfast, but not the crowds of a full resort. We are dedicated to providing you with first class experience at a real value. Whether you are traveling for business or pleasure, staying for an evening or a week, you will appreciate the hotel's many details and amenities designed with your comfort and convenience in mind. From the inviting hotel lobby filled with items from Hawaii's past and breathtaking view of the ocean and Pohakumanu Bay to the luxuriously appointed rooms and suites, it is our goal to make every moment of your stay comfortable and enjoyable. We offer a rare combination of functionality, indulgence, and value appreciated by today's discerning travelers. How we became Innkeepers: It was truly Love at First Sight. When you step foot onto the Estate it will move you. Many guests comment on it, and John and Michele were not immune to it when they saw the property for the first time in December of 1999. Of course it did not look as it does today. In 1999 there was only the main house, the Macadamia Nut Orchard and a 60 foot wide open ditch that was a dranage easement for the highway. But as Michele has often said, "It had good bones." There was potential to share this lovely place with others while making it a home for their family.
